What Are Dental Implants? Dentist in Scottsdale Answers

June 17, 2017

Are you considering dental implants? If you’d like to know more about how they work, your dentist in Scottsdale has the answers. If you have ever had to replace a charger for your phone or laptop, you know just having the cord isn’t enough — you also need the part that plugs into the wall. It’s kind of the same if you’ve lost a tooth. Dental implants are the only replacement option that give you back the stabilizing root as well as the crown, or the portion you can see. Why does that matter so much? Your dentist in Scottsdale, Dr. Alex Martin, explains more about dental implants in this week’s blog post.

What’s the Big Deal About Dental Implants?

Dental implants are getting a lot of press these days, and for good reason. By replacing a missing tooth from the root up, they closely mimic the natural dental structure. Smiles restored with this comprehensive replacement look and function as well as they did before tooth loss occurred — or even better. Other options in replacement, like a fixed bridge or traditional denture, only provide you with the missing crowns. Without sufficient stimulation or blood flow from tooth’s roots, nutrients the jawbone needs to thrive are sent elsewhere — and the jaw will gradually shrink as a result. Non-implant supported tooth replacements need to be refitted periodically just to keep up.

Dental implants promote better oral health, and can last a lifetime with proper maintenance. Indeed, nothing replaces missing teeth better.

The benefits of dental implants include:

  • A whole tooth replacement
  • Stabilized jaw bone
  • Look, feel, and function just like natural teeth
  • No need for denture creams or adhesives
  • A long-lasting investment

Procedure for Dental Implants

Dental implants are traditionally completed in two phases: implantation and restoration. Most treatments last anywhere from six months to a year. In select cases, however, dental implants can be placed and restored on the same day.

Dr. Martin will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for the initial placement of your dental implants. The two doctors partner together to ensure you have the most effective treatment plan. After your dental implants have been placed, they gradually grow together with the jawbone in the process known as osseointegration. It is this time in between placement and restoration that gives dental implants unsurpassed stability.

Once osseointegration has occurred, the top of each implant is exposed and a healing cap is placed. After one more brief recovery period, the dental implants are restored with the sturdy prosthetic teeth.

Dental implants can support a…

  • Single crown
  • Partial denture, fixed or removable
  • Full removable denture

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Adults who are reasonably healthy and whose tooth loss is recent are usually eligible for dental implants. The only way to know for sure is to visit your implant dentist. Dr. Martin will evaluate your tooth loss and the health of your jawbone to determine whether or not you can safely undergo the procedure for dental implants. Even if your jawbone is not initially strong enough to support implants, you may still be eligible for the replacement option by undergoing a bone graft or sinus lift first.
